A small, shallow neighborhood pool at Vesuvio Playground in SoHo, good for younger kids cooling off in summer. Entry is free and no reservation is needed; bring a padlock for the lockers.
Chelsea Recreation Center in Chelsea has an indoor pool inside a Parks recreation center. Kids can join family swim periods and seasonal Learn to Swim classes run by NYC Parks. Swimmers need a Parks recreation center membership, which is free for youth.
Chelsea Piers' new dedicated swim school on the Hudson River piers teaches kids from 3 months through the teen years in a very warm, UV-filtered pool. Lessons progress from water comfort and safety to stroke technique and endurance, in group or one-on-one formats.
British Swim School holds lessons at this Koreatown pool, starting with babies as young as 3 months. Kids move from water acclimation to survival skills like floating and rolling over, then on to stroke development; adaptive classes are offered too.
Tony Dapolito Recreation Center in West Village offers both an indoor pool and a summer outdoor pool plus a diving pool. Families can swim indoors all year with a Parks membership and use the free outdoor pool in summer. NYC Parks also runs kids' swim instruction here.
