Middle and high schoolers take hands-on programs in areas like Arduino electronics, cybersecurity, sustainable city engineering, game design and machine learning, run by NYU's engineering school in Downtown Brooklyn. The flagship ARISE program places high schoolers in university research labs for ten summer weeks.
This fabrication and robotics lab next to the Brooklyn Heights Library hosts field trips, FIRST LEGO League support and robotics workshops for students, with 3D printers, laser cutters and CNC machines. Weekday access is reserved for District 13 schools, and other NYC FIRST members may visit when space allows.
Students work through a personalized plan built from an initial skills assessment, getting small-group help from instructors on everything from number sense to algebra and test prep. Kids can also bring school homework to get support during sessions.
Kids use Minecraft, Roblox and game engines as a gateway to coding, then branch into stop-motion, cinematography, CAD, robotics and electronics in project-based lessons. The studio runs weekly summer camps, seasonal after-school lessons and workshops on school days off.
