Play-based tennis classes built around games for the youngest players, roughly toddlers through early grade school. Kids learn to move, swing and rally in small groups, and families can book a trial class before joining a session.
Children as young as 2 through teens learn karate blended with yoga, breathing exercises and mindfulness. Both small group sessions and 30-40 minute private lessons are offered, and instruction is adapted for kids with ADHD, autism and other special needs.
Champions teaches kids martial arts in age-grouped classes, starting with a Little Tigers program for the youngest students and continuing through kids, teen and adult classes. Students work on kicks, forms and self-defense while building focus, and the school also offers after-school care, summer camp and a competition team.
Supreme teaches taekwondo to kids in two age groups: Tiny Tigers for children 6 and under and Warriors for ages 6-12. Kids practice kicks, forms and self-control in energetic classes, and the school also runs a summer camp and birthday parties.
The city's largest public tennis facility, with 26 clay and 4 hard courts near West 93rd Street, runs junior clinics, after-school classes, Tiny Tots and summer camp. Kids in lessons do not need a Parks tennis permit.
Central Park has 26 ballfields for baseball and softball, including the Heckscher Ballfields and the Great Lawn, plus fall soccer and flag football on the North Meadow. Many Manhattan youth leagues play here, and families can use open fields for pickup games.
